Transforming Regular Chargers or Outlets into Smart Devices

Q1: I have an existing regular charger or outlet. Can Plugzio Universal transform it into a smart device?

Q1a: Can I put Plugzio on an existing level 2 charger?

A1: Yes, Plugzio Universal can indeed convert your regular charger or outlet into a smart, connected device. This is possible as long as the current on your electrical circuit does not exceed 20A at 120V/208V/240V. You can simply install the Plugzio Universal in-line with your device to upgrade its functionality.

Q2: What if the current on my electrical circuit exceeds 20A?

A2: If your electrical circuit exceeds 20A, there are three general strategies to successfully install a smart in-line device like Plugzio Universal:

1. Most Scalable Option: Install an Electrical Sub-Panel

For the most scalability, consider installing an electrical sub-panel. This allows you to distribute power more effectively, running dedicated 20A lines to each parking space connected to a Plugzio device.

2. Most Affordable Option: Adjust the Internal Dial on Some EVSEs

If affordability is your main concern, some electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) have an internal dial that you can set to cap the maximum current at below 20A. Once set, you can install Plugzio Universal to transform the EVSE into a smart charger.

3. Most Powerful Option: Replace Your Existing Charger or High-Power Outlet

For the most powerful solution, you might consider replacing your existing charger or high power outlet. The Plugzio team recommends this product as a suitable replacement:  Plugzio OCPP Charger .

Regardless of the method chosen, the end result is a smarter, more connected charging system that offers improved functionality and efficiency.

Q3: Why does Plugzio Universal support a maximum of 20A?

A3: The maximum support of 20A for Plugzio Universal is mainly due to considerations around load-balancing in electrical circuits. Chargers that draw more than 16A place a significant demand on the electrical panel. As the number of chargers increases, maintaining balance in the load becomes an increasingly important issue.

For circuits that draw more than 20A from the electrical panel, we recommend using Plugzio OCPP chargers, which are priced at around $1,500. These chargers are designed with the capability to dynamically adjust their power draw in response to changes in demand. This feature allows for multiple chargers to be installed on the same electrical circuit while managing load balancing efficiently, making them a great solution for high-demand environments.
