What are the different types of Plugzio hardware and prices?

Plugzio provides two types of electric vehicle charging hardware.  Charging outlets  or  Chargers with built-in cables. 

All Plugzio hardware can be managed, monitored and monetized by the Plugzio Power Management Platform.

Type 1: Plugzio Charging Outlets (120V or 240V)

Charging cables are widely available and commoditized. Not only every electric vehicles comes with a charging cable but one can also be easily purchased from Amazon for under $200 dollars (120V & 240V). This makes providing chargers with built-in cable redundant.

The benefits of using an outlet for charging are:
Easy installation
Installing an outlet doesn't require a special technician which significantly reduces the overall installation cost.
Low operational cost
Outlets can last for a very long time without requiring any maintenance.
Multi-purpose functionality
In addition to electric vehicle owners, an outlet can be used to charge an electric scooter, e-bike, and any other electrical devices. We have clients who use the outlets to vacuum clean their cars in addition to charging them.

In North America, unlike the rest of the world, it is common to see public electric vehicle chargers with built-in charging cables. In contrast, in Norway, which is dubbed the EV capital of Europe, you will rarely see EV chargers with a built-in cable. As seen in the picture below, electric vehicle owners bring their own charging cords to plug into the public/private chargers.



There are two main disadvantages to having a charger with a built-in charging cord:

High maintenance costs
Charging cables require constant maintenance, a scratch on the cable and you need to change the entire unit for safety reasons.
When drivers bring their own charging cords, they care for them and as a result, they don't through the cord on the ground expecting the property to provide unnecessary repairs.
Unreliability - Frequent Downtime
Charging cables have a high chance of failure due to having many moving parts. A malfunctioning charging cable can result in the entire unit requiring service which often takes weeks/months to repair.

Based on the reasons mentioned above, we generally don't recommend installing chargers with built-in cables. For parking spaces where vehicles park for extended periods of time, such as residential/office spaces, it's recommended to go with  EV outlets .

Having said that, if you want to provide the extra convenience of providing a charging cable along with your charger, Plugzio offers two types of products:
